An Artistic Couple: A Conversation and Explorations

A beautiful and very colorful exhibit of acrylic and watercolor paintings in conversation.

GAIL FRANCINE LIEBHABER: I seek every opportunity for awe—to look, listen, and be moved by what catches my gaze. Can I capture the ephemeral light on a hillside, the shifting reflections in flowing water? Can you feel my deep gratitude for color—both vibrant and subtle? Which emotions get stirred within you and do my paintings help these fleeting moments to last a bit longer?

In this exhibition, I invite you to pause, to see how color, shape, and texture can open a space for your own beliefs about beauty, wonder, and the world around us. Art is a conversation—between the artist and the canvas, between the viewer and the work. I hope our paintings inspire dialogue, with me, with us, and within yourself.

RUVEN LIEBHABER: Through my acrylic painting practice I depict my conceptions of the workings of the cosmos and the play of the natural world.  Form, movement and message are represented through geometric pattern, free-form shapes, and sometimes include words.  I am fascinated by paint mixing, intensifying and thinning until just the right hue, value and opacity emerges. Often I work on a large scale, with multiple small canvases alongside for experimenting (these sometimes turn out to be complete in themselves!).  My greatest satisfaction comes with spontaneous changes in the midst of the process.  I accept commissions for large paintings based on my unique motifs.

GAIL FRANCINE LIEBHABER: BIO: Gail Francine Liebhaber first dipped her brush into painting in 2010—on a whim, with no formal training, simply following curiosity. Stepping away from her role as Director of Career Services at Harvard Divinity School and full-time work, she gifted herself the time to explore a creative path. She was drawn to watercolor, a medium that allows her to blend form, shape, and color into an intuitive expression of connection.  Her work has been exhibited in Cambridge, Lexington, and Concord, MA. Since relocating to the Hudson Valley during COVID-19, she has continued her artistic journey, studying with Staats Fasoldt at WSA, Betsy Jacaruso, and virtually with Janet Hobbs of the North Cambridge Art Association. She was a member of Rhinebeck’s Gallery 71 from 2022–23 and is currently part of the Painting Circle in Red Hook. Alongside her art, Gail remains dedicated to her career coaching practice of 30 years, cherishing time with her grandchildren and embracing the cultural adventures of travel. To see the world through an artist’s eyes is a gift. I vowed to share what I create, in the hope that it brings joy to the viewer.

RUVEN LIEBHABER: BIO: Ruven Liebhaber is a Hudson Valley, NY based artist and poet.  He graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with degrees in Fine Arts and Architecture.  Ruven began painting ten years ago, taking classes at the Concord Art Museum and the Cambridge Center.  He has exhibited at multiple locations in the Boston area, and at Art Gallery 71 in Rhinebeck. After a career of working as an architect / project development consultant, primarily on senior living and hospice residences, he now focuses on artistic creations, naturework and hospice volunteering. Ruven’s paintings evoke the underlying wholeness of the cosmos.  His paintings are both spontaneous out-of-mind creations and geometric formulations.  His poetry often comes from direct experiences in nature.  Both are modes of expression that provide  an opportunity to reach deep into one’s own imaginings.
