Alan Reich

Photographs & Collaborations

June 5th — July 28th

Exhibit exemplifies Reich’s use of rich intensive color to isolate architectural features such as doors or stairways while showing an integrated street or city scape.  Each scene reflects the personality of the city in which the photograph was made. These skillful photographs, much more than tourist made snapshots, show the sensibility of a skilled observer who chronicles each scene’s particular details with an eye to the entire composition.  Other works standing back from immediate details provide an abstract overview of a regional atmosphere allowing the photograph’s emphasis to be placed on its inhabitants or those passing by. Still others peer closely at spaces flattening them so that one perceives only colors, shapes or textural minutiae embedded in its surface.

Several of Reich’s three dimensional collaborations with Roxie Johnson, Ania Aldrich, Barbara Walter, Dea Archbald and Kristen Wicklund will be included in the exhibit. Each of these suggests a keen awareness of wood’s capabilities to arouse a caressing stroke after being shaped into a fully utilitarian object.
