Artist Bio
MARK HOPKINS is a local artist born in Poughkeepsie. He took a liberal arts degree from Saint Olaf College in Minnesota and spent several years in Minneapolis painting sets for opera, theater, and Sesame Street. In 1987 he moved to Thailand and spent the next 13 years living in and traveling around Asia, returning the the US in 2000. He currently lives in Rhinebeck.Throughout his career in the arts, Mark has had a fascination with the human figure and face. These two forms are the most exacting disciplines for an artist to learn and the most rewarding to master. An accurate likeness is the foundation of Mark’s portraits which range in style from classical, where his focus is on the personality of the subject, to stylized and contemporary where the emphasis is on composition, style and color. The skills of portraiture inform Mark’s creative works done in the surrealist idiom.
